PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...CORRECTED FOR EPPLEY
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OMAHA/VALLEY
1130 AM CST MON FEB 02 2004
...NEW RECORD SET FOR FEBRUARY SNOW DEPTH AT OMAHA...
ALMOST EXACTLY ONE WEEK AFTER THE LAST MAJOR WINTER STORM...ANOTHER
ROUND OF SIGNIFICANT SNOW HAS HIT EASTERN NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST
IOWA. THE SNOW FROM LAST WEEKS STORM HAS BARELY HAD A CHANCE
TO
MELT...SO THE NEW SNOW HAS PILED UP ON TOP OF THE OLD SNOW TO
RESULT
IN SOME OF THE DEEPEST SNOW PACK THE REGION HAS EXPERIENCED
IN MANY
YEARS.
AT THE OMAHA EPPLEY AIRPORT...11.3 INCHES OF NEW SNOW FELL...GIVING
THEM A SNOW DEPTH OF 21 INCHES. THIS IS A NEW RECORD FOR
SNOW DEPTH
IN THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY. THE OLD RECORD WAS 18 INCHES...WHICH
WAS
SET IN 1965. THE ALL TIME RECORD SNOW DEPTH FOR OMAHA
IS 27
INCHES...WHICH OCCURRED IN MARCH OF 1960...AND IS ONLY 6 INCHES
GREATER THAN THE CURRENT SNOW DEPTH.
THIS SNOWSTORM AND THE STORM LAST WEEK WERE THE RESULT OF AN
ACTIVE
WEATHER PATTERN OVER MUCH OF THE UNITED STATES...WITH NUMEROUS
LOW
PRESSURE SYSTEMS MOVING THROUGH THE CENTRAL PLAINS. THESE
LOWS
HAVE BEEN PULLING MOISTURE FROM THE SOUTHERN STATES NORTH INTO
THE
COLD AIR WHICH HAS SETTLED INTO EASTERN NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST
IOWA. THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS...COLD AIR...AND MOISTURE
HAVE
COMBINED TO CREATE VERY EFFICIENT SNOW PRODUCING WINTER STORMS.
THE SNOWFALL POTENTIAL DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE OVER FOR THIS WEEK.
ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS PREDICTED TO MOVE THROUGH THE
PLAINS
ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY...WITH A CHANCE FOR MORE ACCUMULATING
SNOW.
