AMS National Meeting - Long Beach, CA
January 9-14, 2000
The 80th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society was held on January 9-14, 2000 in Long Beach California, at the Long Beach Convention Center.

January 11, 2000 (74 F)

Professor Anderson, Professor Dewey as well as the following UNL Meteorology students:  Sheldon Drobot; Sarah Tessendorf; Jonathan Garner; Jim Keiser; Steve Kroening; Matt Masek; and Justin Wardyn participated in the meeting.

The meeting featured two days of papers on severe weather research dedicated to the life and research efforts of Dr. Ted Fujita.  There were also two days of presentations on the findings from VORTEX (Verification of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment).  There were banquets to attend; a huge exhibits hall to explore (they had demonstrations of the latest in meteorological technology, and lots of free handouts like thermometers, posters and calendars, etc.); alumni to meet; and a sea port city to explore in 70 degree sunny weather.

The following photographs, taken by Professor Dewey, are presented to capture the experience of attending our national annual meeting and it is our hope that it encourages those who could not attend to attend next year's meeting in Albuquerque, NM.

There was a banquet for over 2000 people and we had an incredible Electronic Theater showing of satellite imagery Joining our current students at dinner were alumni Amanda Adams, (2nd from the left) and Julie Demuth (4th from the left)

We ran into Chris Coleman, graduate of our meteorology program in 1992 and now working for strategic Weather in Palm Springs, CA.
Photographed from the plane, on the far right is the ocean liner "Queen Mary" and the convention center is at the center left (with a large parking lot to the right).
And after an exciting week, our students begin to gather outside the conference center at the UNL van ready to make the trip back home.
